Pockets and Mother's Day

I am writing this morning before Mother Day gets any worse. I knew it wasn't going to be great for a while. Chris is doing an ambulance course all weekend and left at 7.30 this morning and won't be back until late. I've just discovered the pram is still in the back of the car and Chris has the car. So my plan of walking with the girls to a nice cafe and having milkshakes and cakes has gone out of the window and now we are stuck here all day.
Isn't it ironic that all I really want at the moment for Mother's Day is peace and quiet some time out from the girls, maybe time to read or just be by myself to sit and saviour the silence. I haven't had time by myself or been by myself in the house for weeks. Nap time this week has not been good and definitely not relaxing.
So I think I'll make myself a coffee and some eggs for breakfast and just let the girls destroy what they haven't destroyed in the house and let them have a Wiggles marathon.
I'll finish with a hint that made me happy yesterday - perfect pocket corners. I remembered the tutorial from Anna Maria Horner on making perfect circles and realised I can do the same for pockets. Using foil and cardboard cut to the shape you want just iron it down, no burnt fingers and the perfect shape!

What a super-duper tip! I like it. I'm sorry your Mother's Day won't be quite how you'd hoped. I hope it's a peaceful day for you even though there won't be any outings (or cakes!).

Oh dear, I hope your mothers day better - thank goodness for the Wiggles! I'm also home alone looking after my bub while Warren is out running a half marathon. I think this must entitle us to a kid free day another time. Although I love Thomas to bits, sometimes I just dream about being able to browse in a bookshop without any little person tagging along.

Thanks for the pocket tip - that would be useful for all sorts of applique ideas, it's great!

I'm so sorry your day was not what you wanted. And well done you for making the most of it.

One day the girls will grow old enough to understand the importance of honouring their Mum, and it will all be worthwhile. One day...

Great tip! I read that tutorial and didn't connect the dots about patch pockets, especially the curved corners. Thanks heaps! Hope your Mother's Day has improved. You can always do an in-lieu day some other time.

I feel your pain - stuck at home, pramless, not alone.

For this less than ideal situation, you get to inflict an additional episode of embarrassment on your teenage girls.

What? You don't keep score??!

What a great idea for pockets. The fabric is cute too. I wish I had of had some quiet time without children yesterday, as all they did was fight with each other, and then us as well. I think sometimes mum's should be allowed a day off every now and then.

Sometimes we just need a break don't we??? Maybe if we could buy some of that time we may be able to buy the quiet kind too! Mothers day for me usually consist of travelling in the car to be able to meet both of our mothers who live about 2 1/2 hours away from eachother. I though that when I became a mother this would stop but it appears to be a continuing tradition. I did get a very early egg on toast and cuddles though which were priceless! I hope you ended up having a nice night at least??!!

oh kate, i'm sorry your mother's day didn't go to plan. once again i applaud you for your honesty on what being a mum is like- it's hard! my day wasn't as i had dreamed, either, (think a tantrum in the middle of a busy *road*, then dragging the screaming girl into the car in front of a circle of onlookers.)
i swear if i see another mother in that situation i'll lend a hand instead of stare!
i think you're doing an amazing job, and i hope you get some time to read next sunday instead.

Amazingly clever idea for a kid-trashed woman.

I am a Great Believer in Wiggles' Marathons.

Love the tutorial on making the perfect pocket because I'm having problems with the one I need to add to a sundress. By the way, do you know if you need to cut the top longer if you are going to add elastic to the top for making it bunch up a little?

Sorry to hear your mother's day went similar to mine...hardly say hubby and the kids treated me awful with back talking, whining, and demands. I thought the same thing as you...just a day alone in my own home alone, spending half of it reading, crafting, and than the other half doing some good cleaning out.

won;t be long and they will be all grown up and you will have so much time you will be waiting for them to come through the door as i am now.. it is hard to understand this when all you want is peace and quite.. but beautiful mum these days of frantic and hetic will go as quickly as they come.. love the pocket...will be a fantastic time saver for me..margie

My Mum still thinks Mothers Day is for her to go out unattended (art galleries, bookshops etc) because now her days are full of grandchildren.
